Intro
Deliver a comprehensive policy management system enabling Pie to scale more efficiently while making employees workdays more enjoyable.

Process

Pie is one of the fastest growing Insurtech companies in the US with the goal of making workers’ comp insurance as easy as pie. As with most startup companies, Pie needed to get to market quickly and did so by writing their policies with a 3rd party. While this provided the capabilities needed to get to market quickly, it also hindered their ability to viably scale.

Simplifying a complex process through empathy

Before a single pixel was cast, 2-months of discovery was conducted to fully understand 1) user needs, 2) what would create business impact, and 3) what the scope of the project would entail. We learned that the complexity of systems clouded an already complex process. In our learning we found patterns that we could leverage to simplify current business processes and build a supporting set of software tools from.

Interviews were conducted with 3 key user groups (1 internal, 2 external) to identify key needs.

Key insight (Internal/External 1):

  • We’re experts and can handle a lot of information
  • The process is highly collaborative and iterative before sending information
  • Usability basics account for most of the workflow inefficiencies

Key insight (External 2):

  • We aren’t on your system frequently
  • When we are we have a specific task
  • And we want to get that task done quickly

Given the importance of the project is was vital to align stakeholders on the product vision, key features and technical requirements needed to execute. Leaning on the research insight we were able to align the executive team on a multi-year product roadmap while getting an MVP system to market within 8-months.

Result

The final result was a policy management system that would allow Pie to break from its current 3rd party systems, save money, operate more efficiently and allow them to own their future. Additionally, a multi-year roadmap was built to ensure key features were delivered to minimize the impact of transition and continued to support the goal of operational efficiency.
